Alumni Spotlight: Manda Factor (NTHS '89)

North Thurston High School graduate Manda Factor (then known as Mandy Culbertson, Class of 1989) is the co-host of Seattle’s Morning News on KIRO Newsradio! Throughout her career, she has earned multiple Edward R. Murrow and Associated Press Television Radio Association awards.

Manda shared some memories with us about her experience in NTPS and how it prepared her for an exciting career in broadcast news.

What are some of your favorite memories of attending NTHS?

One of my favorite memories at NTHS is when chemistry/physics teacher Len Booth stood on his desk and proclaimed, “Water is weird!” I still quote him to this day. I remember NTHS mainly for its sense of camaraderie. I certainly remember all the awesome extra activities. Ronna Reed was an amazing marketing teacher. I have fond memories of running the student store and going on DECA trips. I made lifelong friends at NTHS. I just remember a fun, inviting atmosphere.

How did your education in North Thurston Public Schools prepare you for your career?

I think the selection of Advanced Placement classes was great. Again, the activities. The more you try, the more you learn. I was never bored as a Ram. My first “real” broadcast-related experience was announcing the girls’ basketball games at NTHS. I've now been talking on the radio for a living for 35 years, currently with KIRO Newsradio on Seattle's Morning News.

What advice do you have for current high school students about taking advantage of their education?

Don't be afraid to be involved as much as possible! Try new things! Don't sweat the small stuff. I believe 10 percent of life is what happens, and 90 percent is how you deal with it. Be kind!
