Alumni Spotlight: Jamin Rader (THS '15)

Jamin Rader (Timberline High School Class of 2015) is a climate scientist who earned his Ph.D. in atmospheric science. In his spare time, Jamin enjoys road trips, sharing information on his website about wheelchair-accessible locations. He also plays sled hockey with the Seattle Kraken! He shared some reflections on how his time at NTPS prepared him for his future.

What are some of your favorite memories of attending NTPS schools?

Early exposure to the natural Earth is probably the reason I decided to study atmospheric science and climate. I remember taking care of crayfish in Ms. Perkins’ 3rd grade and spawning salmon in Mr. Johnson’s 4th grade class at Meadows Elementary School. I feel so lucky to have gotten this time in nature in the elementary classroom.

I became paraplegic in my senior year of high school. That time of transition would have been a lot harder if it wasn't for the generosity, love, and support of my cross-country, track and field, journalism, and greater Timberline High School communities.

How did your NTPS education prepare you for your career?

I took journalism and worked on The Blazer newsmagazine my sophomore through senior years of high school. The skills I gained in news writing and page design are still central in my day-to-day work. Effectively communicating your passion will open new teaching and learning opportunities.

What advice do you have for current high school students about taking advantage of educational opportunities?

Surround yourself with people who make you feel happy and brave. High school is a time for big transitions and lots of students are trying to find themselves. Find the people who amplify your voice and support you being you; you’ll find the place where you are happiest and can make change. Try the sport you’ve never tried, the club with people you’ve never met, and move on if it’s not for you.
