Alumni Spotlight: Sheriff Mike Morrison (NTHS '99)

Mike Morrison is a 1999 graduate of North Thurston High School and the Sheriff of Chelan County. We asked Sheriff Morrison to share some reflections on his time in North Thurston Public Schools and how it prepared him for a career in law enforcement!

What are some of your favorite memories of attending NTPS schools?

Some of my most memorable experiences come from the supportive and dedicated staff who showed up each day with energy, positivity, and a clear focus on preparing us for future success. They helped shape not only my education, but also my character and mindset to give back to others. I’d like to specifically acknowledge Bert Stevens and Robert Howard from Mountain View Elementary, both of whom served as positive role models who led with patience, care, and understanding. I’m also deeply thankful for Lynn Morris (NTHS), who consistently modeled professionalism, discipline, and excellence, along with former Principal Kay Thomas, whose time and dedication as a coach helped prepare me to earn an athletic scholarship. His impact was significant and lasting. Gone but certainly not forgotten.

How did your NTPS education prepare you for your career?

My time in NTPS provided a strong academic foundation that helped me transition into college and build the tools needed to succeed there and later, in my professional life. The academic rigor combined with athletic opportunities played a key role in helping me reach goals I may not have otherwise achieved. I carry the support, encouragement, and guidance I received with me to this day and strive to reflect those same values in my current role as the elected Sheriff of Chelan County, both professionally and when mentoring others.

What advice do you have for current high school students about taking advantage of educational opportunities?

Start by identifying what you want to achieve, visualize it, and put in the consistent work required to get there. Lean on those around you for support, but remember that reaching your goals will require your full effort, focus, and determination. Believe in yourself, stay grounded, and don’t let outside distractions derail your progress. Enjoy your time in school, keep a healthy balance between academics and personal life, and most importantly, build relationships and friendships. Those connections can open doors and expand your opportunities down the road as it really is a small world.
