Athletic Code

Athletics are an important part of a student’s education and provide students with opportunities to grow as learners, teammates, leaders, and members of the school community. Academic success comes first. Participation in athletics should support, not replace, a student’s responsibility to attend school, engage in learning, and make progress toward graduation.

Through participation, student-athletes develop responsibility, discipline, confidence, perseverance, sportsmanship, and a sense of belonging. Student-athletes represent themselves, their team, their school, their family, and North Thurston Public Schools (NTPS). Because of this, they are expected to uphold high standards of academic effort, behavior, and conduct.

Our Goals for Athletics

  • Keep academics first and support students in meeting graduation and eligibility requirements.
  • Provide a safe, inclusive, and structured environment.
  • Build leadership, responsibility, integrity, respect, trust, confidence, and perseverance.
  • Promote sportsmanship toward teammates, opponents, officials, coaches, and spectators.

Shared Responsibilities

Student-Athletes

Attend school regularly, come prepared to learn and participate, maintain academic eligibility, follow school and team expectations, communicate concerns, and represent NTPS with integrity.

Families

Review this code with your student, complete all required FinalForms acknowledgments, keep contact and health information current, support academic responsibility and positive sportsmanship, and communicate concerns respectfully.

Coaches and Schools

Teach and reinforce academic, behavioral, and team expectations; supervise students; communicate clearly; document concerns; respond fairly; and support each student’s academic, athletic, and personal growth.

Participation in athletics is a privilege. A student may be suspended from competition, removed from a team, or ruled ineligible when a student violates school behavior expectations, the Athletic Code, or any WIAA guidelines.
